Traverse City Open Sales brings rare opportunity—and a behind-the-scenes look at high-performance horses
Traverse City, MI – July 14, 2025 — Traverse City will take center stage in the global equestrian world this July as it hosts the Traverse City Open Sales, a landmark auction of 14 sport horses presented by international show jumping legend Paul Schockemöhle.
The Traverse City Open Sales brings horses from the program of Paul Schockemöhle, one of the most respected names in global equestrian sport. For buyers, this is a rare opportunity to acquire world-class jumping and competition horses directly from Europe. For spectators and curious newcomers, it’s a glimpse into a little-known—but highly influential—corner of international sport.
“These are not just beautiful animals; they are elite athletes in their own right,” said Matt Morrissey, Event Director at Traverse City Horse Shows. “Each has been carefully bred, trained, and prepared for high-level competition. We’re proud to bring a moment like this to Traverse City—where equestrian sport continues to grow in visibility and reach.”
Behind every show jumping event or Olympic podium is an entire industry devoted to breeding, training, and scouting future talent. Auctions like this are where many of those careers begin. Comparable to a pro-scouting draft in other sports, this event connects buyers—including top riders, trainers, and owners—with young horses selected for their athleticism, temperament, and pedigree.
The horses will be presented for live bidding in front of a crowd of enthusiasts and spectators, with preview trials taking place throughout the week. All veterinary records are available to registered buyers.
The Traverse City Open Sales is free and open to the public, with doors opening at 6 PM. The auction begins at 7 PM and will take place ringside at Flintfields Horse Park in Williamsburg, home of the 13-week Traverse City Horse Shows series.
