Traverse City Horse Shows Celebrates History and Heritage of The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians

Traverse City Horse Shows (TCHS) will open the 2022 show season on June 8 in continued partnership with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians and their properties, the Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel and Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.

This partnership commenced in 2019 and continues to showcase the culture and heritage of the Native American Community through cultural installations and exhibitions during TCHS events. In addition, our weekly Grand Prix events and highest-level competition all take place in the Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel International Ring. The amenities of the Grand Traverse Band’s local properties have become an integral part of TCHS exhibitors’ stay in Traverse City, and we look forward to the continuation of our partnership.

Thanks in part to the Tribes’ support, TCHS has expanded from six weeks to thirteen weeks of Olympic-caliber, international showjumping, offering over $7 million in prize money and bringing competitors from 46 States and 26 countries.  The first major event of the 2022 season is the $138,600 Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel Grand Prix on Sunday, June 12 at 2:00pm and will welcome back spectators for the first time since the start of the pandemic. Proceeds from General Admission sales for the Grand Prix will help to aid with Tornado Relief in Gaylord and can be purchased on TraverseCityHorseShows.com. In additional, all Tribal members are invited to attend free of charge.

“We’re looking forward to another spectacular season of show jumping,” said Rich Bailey, CEO for Grand Traverse Resort and Casinos. “The horse shows significantly contribute to the local economy, and their new Charity Ticket Program allows us to give much needed support to regional charities.”

As the Official Stay & Play Partners of TCHS, Grand Traverse Resort and Spa and Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel provide exhibitors and families a surplus of activities to make the most of their time in Traverse City. Apart from offering luxury stays in close proximity to the showgrounds, these venues house: an award-winning spa, shopping, a fitness center and world-class golf courses. They are also home to a variety of restaurants including the newly opened Oakwood Proper Burgers at Turtle Creek Casino.

“The Grand Traverse Band are leaders in our community, and it is an honor to have them as partners,” said Director of Traverse City Horse Shows, Matt Morrissey. “Our location in beautiful Northern Michigan is one of the many things that makes our events so special, and the Grand Traverse Band is an integral part of that region. Through our partnership, we look forward to sharing their culture and history while simultaneously enriching competitor and spectator experiences.

“Traverse City Horse Shows encompasses what it means to be a destination horse show, and Turtle Creek Hotel & Casino and the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa offer something for everyone,” continued Morrissey. “The Grand Traverse Band aligns with our mission to make the most of everyone’s visit to Traverse City and create an exceptional experience.”

The 2022 season will kick off with the Traverse City Spring Shows, presented by Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel, running from June 8 through June 26 with top-level show jumping competition taking up the spotlight in the Turtle Creek Casino & Hotel International Ring.
